It is an old walkway built by the viceroy Marqués de Montesclaros in 1611 and rebuilt in 1770 by the viceroy Manuel Amat y Junient. In 1856, President Ramón Castilla gave it a new and definitive unitary outline by ordering the placement of a beautiful wrought iron fence imported from England.
Its perspective is the Convent and the Church of the Barefoot, at the foot of the hill of San Cristóbal. On its sides are the churches of the Virgen del Patrocinio and Santa Liberata. It has a length of at least four hundred meters.

According to the chroniclers of the Colony, its original design consisted of three streets, two lateral for carriages and a central one for pedestrians. There were three fountains and eight rows of trees that offered passersby shade and coolness.
The definitive remodel it underwent in the 19th century turned it into a romantic stroll. It has side bars, benches, 12 Italian marble statues representing the months of the year and ornamental vases.
