One of the Icons of Italy is undoubtedly the Tower of Pisa, but visiting Pisa just to see its famous tower is a mistake. Pisa is much more and has much more than the tower, Pisa in addition to the monuments of the Square of Miracles, has a historic center that deserves the visit as much as the Square of Miracles. After visiting the Cinque Terre, we went to Pisa where we stayed for 3 nights in the campervan car park, which I can say is very good and comfortable for visiting the city.
All step by step information below.

The following is the video of Pisa that we recorded during our visit:

The trip

House where Galileo was born

Lat: 43.716418 - Lon: 10.406184
N: 43° 42' 59.1048 "       E: 10° 24' 22.2624"

Galileo was born in this house in Pisa, on February 15, 1564. The House of Galileo is located in Palestro 26/22 in front of the Republic Square, there is no visit inside, just a plaque informing his place of birth and without much to see, but the most interesting thing is to walk the entire route from Praça dos Milagres to Galileo's birthplace, passing through the historic center, walking between narrow streets and alleys full of history and most of them retaining their original design.

The Lugarnos and the bridges on the banks of the Arno River in Pisa

Lat: 43.716184 - Lon: 10.401989
N: 43° 42' 58.2624 "       E: 10° 24' 7.1604"

The river Arno originates in the Apennine mountain range and, in its 241 km course, crosses the Tuscany region, passing through the cities of Florence and Pisa before flowing into the sea.
One of the biggest attractions of a trip along the river are the bridges built over the centuries. The Arno River runs through the entire city of Pisa, as well as Florence. The streets that line the banks of the river are called Lungarnos. The Lungarnos of Pisa, with its beautiful buildings and palaces, together with the romantic bridges, are one of the most characteristic images of Pisa.
Leaving the Plaza de los Milagres, crossing the historic center towards Piazza Garibaldi, you will be able to admire all the houses along the narrow streets and alleys with excellent restaurants.
In my case, I took advantage of the route to visit the historic center, visit the Lugarnos on the Arno River and visit the house where Galileo Galilei was born.

Pisa's most affluent and luxurious era took place during the late Middle Ages, where all the height of its wealth and glory can still be admired today by the buildings in its historic centre, most of Pisa's magnificent architectural works being from this period. When there is wealth, it always attracts and creates great names in the arts and this apogee was so great that Pisa created its own art (Pisa-Romanesque, a kind of Gothic with an Islamic influence) an example of this style is the famous Duomo of Pisa (Cathedral of Pisa ) having been the first cathedral in the Tuscany region where this style was implemented. It is here in the historic center that you will find Renaissance-era palaces, medieval towers, Gothic-style churches, squares and much more. Pisa has not just one leaning tower, but two. The second Leaning Tower of Pisa is much less famous, it is the belfry of the Church of San Michele degli Scalzi from the 13th century, located on the banks of the River Arno. Pisa was also a great cultural center, with one of the oldest universities in the world (the University of Pisa started in September 1343)

Dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and located in the center of the Square of Miracles, the Cathedral of Pisa is a religious monument built in white and black marble in the Pisan Romanesque style, a style created in Pisa. Construction of the cathedral began in 1064 and ended in 1118, the year of its consecration by Pope Gelasius II. The cathedral was designed by the Greek-born architect Buscheto, at a time when the city was an independent republic and one of the Italian powers. Later, its plan was expanded by the architect Rainaldo, who designed the current façade and this expansion was carried out under the supervision of sculptors Guglielmo and Biduino. The 27 paintings that cover the chancel behind the main altar, depicting Old Testament episodes and Christological scenes, date from the 16th and 17th centuries, by Tuscany's greatest painters, including Andrea del Sarto, Il Sodoma and Domenico Beccafumi. In the construction of the Cathedral, large ancient Roman columns were used, which can still be admired today. One of the admirable pieces is the remarkable Gothic pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.

Construction began in 1152, the Baptistery of Pisa is located next to the Cathedral in the Square of Miracles. The Baptistery of Pisa is about 55 meters high and has a circumference of 107 meters. Its building style is a transition between Romanesque and Gothic. A particularity of the Baptistery is its acoustics where the echoes propagate for several seconds.

Via di Pratale campervan park

This car park, with an area dedicated exclusively to motorhomes, is the best option for anyone visiting Pisa in a motorhome. Located just over 3km from Praça dos Milagres, it has essential services, including energy (500watts) and has an affordable cost, 12 euros without power, 15 euros with power. We stayed in this park and we can say that it is very good, the security is very good, during the day there is a small reception. We advise you to arrive before noon if you want to have a place with power as in the park only a few places on the right side have power sockets.
