In a dominant position over the village, near the northeast slope of the Ossa mountain range, it stands on a hill naturally defended by the Ficalho stream and by the Carrascal stream, smaller tributaries of the Guadiana river.
The medieval castle has a square plan, with walls of about sixty meters on the side, reinforced in the West and East angles by large circular towers. Its Northwest face and part of the Northeast were common around the village. In its interior was erected the mother church, seat of the first parish of the town, and that today is the important Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Viçosa, proclaimed patroness of Portugal in 1646.
It is classified as a National Monument by Decree published on June 23, 1910.
