Formerly called De Orrego, it has been a public site for over 200 years.
It was the scene of the most varied activities. It currently has a fountain brought from France, built of wrought iron and of great artistic value, which has a satyr and three statues of women in the center. There are also on its four sides four statues of women representing fall, winter, spring, and summer, and two lions that belonged to the Victoria Theater, which faced this square and which collapsed completely in the 1906 earthquake.
For the downtown community, it is considered an almost obligatory walk and is where street performers and sporadic exhibitions meet.
