The typical houses of Santana are an ex-libbris of the county of Santana and a tourist sign of the island of Madeira. These houses have a triangular shape and are covered with thatch. They are popularly known as Santana houses.
Originally, these houses consisted of an attic, where agricultural products were kept, and a ground floor, usually a housing area, which was divided into two parts separated by a frontal.
It is believed that these houses are traces of primitive constructions, made of wood and thatch, that were found all over the island. Because there is little stone in the region and the climate is cold in winter, this raw material has been adopted, making it possible to adapt to the seasons of the year, fresh in summer and warm in winter.
There were two types of typical houses: those laid out on the ground on wooden trunks called Creeps and the so-called Half-Wires that were laid on basalt stone walls, which on the ground floor comprised three divisions, living room and two bedrooms. On the upper floor were other sleeping and storage rooms. In the attic it was used to store the seeds for planting the next sowing. These are covered with stub every three years. This cover is composed of at least two layers of stem, the liner or liner or first layer in which the cover is made with the sections of the stem down and the second layer where the stem is placed with the sections upwards. These dwellings go back to the discovery of Madeira, which due to the abundance of wood and straw from the cereal plantation used to cover the dwellings of the people and the so-called haystacks where the animals were kept.
