It was built in 1699 with carved stones from the so-called "Casa de la Sierpe", owned by Cajamarca chief Don Calixto Astopilco, and with stones from the hill of Santa Apolonia. In 1952 catacombs were discovered under the main altar of the church, where were the remains of numerous members of the Franciscan order and members of the indigenous nobility. In addition to the church, you can visit the convent, the Museum of Religious Art and the Shrine of the Sorrowful Virgin, the city's patron.
The image of the virgin is in the Tabernacle Chapel (1685), adjacent to the church of St. Francis, where baroque sculptures, high relief stone carvings depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and the wooden carved choir tents.
