Situated on a hill in the historic center, Petřín Park is the city's main park. The flowers during the month of April, the reddish colors of autumn and the first snows of the winter offer magical and romantic environments to one of the most popular places of excursion for the residents of the capital.
Until the 18th century, the park had only grapevine plantations and it was only in the middle of the same century that this park became a public park thanks to the initiative of Count Chotek. Since then, the park is open year-round.
Viewed from its lower part, stands a Gothic wall, which is traditionally called the "Wall of Hunger". This ancient fortification, built in the fourteenth century during the reign of Charles IV, allowed to hire a labor force then threatened with impoverishment.
The funicular (lanovka in Czech) is a very original means of transportation to climb to the top of the hill without tiring. Initially powered by hydraulic propulsion, the funicular was electrified in the 1930s. It leads us to the magnificent rose bushes of the Baroque Church of St. Lawrence and the Eiffel Tower, a miniature replica of the Parisian tower erected in 1889. The bravest to rise will be rewarded with a spectacular view. Nearby, another attraction keeps the children's audience interested: a labyrinth of mirrors (bludiště in Czech) set in the heart of a building of fanciful architecture. From the upper part of the hill, a beautiful promenade takes you to Strahov's convent and its viewpoint.
On the other side of the wall of famine, we find the Kinsky gardens, whose name comes from the noble family that owned the same: recovered in a romantic style, they lead to the village with the same name, where currently the ethnographic museum is. In this part of the garden we find an interesting architectural building: the small Orthodox church of San Miguel, completely built of wood and with three bells carved from the same material. It was transported from Ukraine in 1928, soon after being bought by the ethnographic museum.
