This National Park was created in 1934, with the purpose of conserving one of the greatest natural beauties of Argentina: the Iguassu Falls, next to the splendid structure of the subtropical jungle that surrounds it. It is located in the north of the province of Misiones, in the department of Iguazú and occupies an area of 67,000 ha. To the north of the Park, separated by the Iguaçu River that forms the international limit, is the Brazilian pair. In 1984, both were declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. Two years later, Unesco granted status equal to the Brazilian pair. The Iguaçu National Park belongs to the Paraná ecoregion or missionary jungle whose pattern of relief and drainage is dominated by a basaltic plateau, reaching altitudes of 700m.
