Casa da Música was built along one of the main traffic hubs of the city center, the Rotunda da Boavista. The place where the building is currently was used for collecting and repairing the electric cars that circulated in the city of Porto.
The initial cost of construction, excluding the value of land, was € 33 million, costing € 111.2 million and being completed four years after the initial estimated period.
In July 1999, when the preparatory work was started, the official objective was still that Casa da Música opened its doors in December 2001, in time to coincide with the end of the European Capital of Culture. It ended up being inaugurated in April 2005, but the works were only formally closed in May of the following year.
The construction of the building brought new challenges to engineering, in order to achieve the unique geometric shape that the building has. The engineering work was carried out by the Ove Arup companies in London together with Afassociados, in Porto.
The architecture of the building was acclaimed internationally. Nicolai Ouroussoff, a New York Times architecture critic, called it "the most attractive project that architect Rem Koolhaas has ever built" and as "a building whose intellectual ardor is combined with its sensual beauty." He also compares it to the "exuberant project" of the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum by the architect Frank Gehry in Bilbao, Spain. "Looking only at the original look of the building, it turns out that this is one of the most important concert halls built in the last 100 years", comparing it to the Walt Disney Theater in Los Angeles and the Auditorium of '' Berlin Philharmonic''.
Although the opening day concert took place on the 14th with the Clans and Lou Reed, the space was only inaugurated on April 15, 2005, by the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio. The Prime Minister, politicians and the society of Porto were present for the concert, given by the Orquestra Nacional do Porto.
Casa da Música has two main auditoriums, although other areas of the building can be adapted for concerts or shows (workshops, educational activities, etc.).
The large auditorium has an initial capacity of 1,238 seats, but may vary according to the occasion.
The small auditorium is flexible, not being advertised a fixed number of seats, although an average of 300 seats and 650 standing places can be defined, depending on the size and location of the stage, the layout of the chairs, presence and size sound equipment and recording equipment, etc.
At the top of the building, there is a third space for shows, designed for 250 seats.
The Casa da Música is the main concert hall of Porto, in Portugal. Located at the Boavista roundabout, halfway between the historic center and Foz, the volume and originality of the moth of Casa da Música are not overlooked.
It was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas as part of the Porto Capital European Culture event in 2001 (Porto 2001), however, the construction was only completed in 2005, immediately becoming an icon of the city.
