The Ethnological Museum (Ethnologisches Museum) is a museum integrated with the State Collections of Berlin, Germany. It has a huge collection of about 500 thousand items, including objects, photographs and documents of an ethnological and ethnographic character from various regions, with an emphasis on extra-European pre-industrial cultures, the largest of its kind worldwide.
The collection of the Ethnological Museum was formed from the art collections and rarities of the princes of Brandenburg, which gave rise to the Royal Art Cabinet of Prussia, which in turn was reorganized, from 1829, forming the Ethnographic Collection , installed in 1856 at the Neue Museum, on the Museum Island.
In 1886 the collection became part of the Museum of Popular Art (Museum für Völkerkunde), and in 1886 it was transferred again, now to a building on the current Stresemannstraße. Its first director, Adolf Bastian, expanded the collection with a series of acquisitions of pieces from all over the world.
With its headquarters destroyed in World War II, the remaining collection was taken to Dahlem, and in the 1970s a museum for Asian and Indian art was formed, renamed in 1999 as the Ethnological Museum.
