Corcovado or Puntudo Volcano, temporarily inactive volcano, stratovolcano type, 2,300 meters above sea level, located in southern Chile, dominating the landscape of the Corcovado Gulf, about 25 km south of the mouth of the Yelcho River and about 50 km north of the mouth of the Tic Toc river. It is administratively circumscribed to the Los Lagos Region, Palena Province, Chaiten Commune. Its geographical location is latitude 43º11`South and longitude 72º47`W.
The whimsical silhouette of the hooked cusp of Corcovado, corresponding to a surviving wall of its old collapsed cone, is very characteristic and is usually present in tourist material that promotes the area as a vacation destination.
The volcano is difficult to access. Its slopes N and E are surrounded by six small lakes, forming a setting of great scenic beauty. The complex is located in the Corcovado National Park, of 209,623 ha.
The material at its base corresponds to lava flows from the Holocene. There are historical records of eruptions from the 19th century and earlier, but they are not entirely reliable, since they correspond to observations made from Chiloé, hundreds of km away, which could have confused the activity of Corcovado with that of nearby Michinmahuida, or Nevado.
Without going any further, Charles Darwin, in 1834, collected testimonies in distant Ancud (180 km away) that spoke of the Corcovado eruptions being famous for: ´´the great masses (of volcanic material) that it projects upwards, and what views burst into the air, they assume many fantastic forms, such as trees. The naturalist took note, astonished, calculating that the column of material expelled must be enormous, if it was possible to see in such detail at such a distance.
The last period of activity observed was in 1934, culminating in a lava flow in November 1935.
Corcovado is a stratovolcano located in the Andes in the Los Lagos Region in Chile about 25 km from the mouth of the Yelcho River.
