Cangas de Onís is a city belonging to the province of Asturias in the area of the Picos de Europa.
Cangas de Onis was the capital of the kingdom of Asturias until the year 774. Here Don Pelayo was established, and it was in this place that the battle of Covadonga took place in 722, where Don Pelayo defeated the Muslim forces and consolidated the power and prestige that allowed him to remain independent and found the first post-Christian kingdom.
