The territory of what is now Cácota was populated by the Cácotas Indians, of the Chitareros family. Regarding its foundation, the priest Enrique Rocheaux, says: ´´That it did not seem prudent for the conqueror Armendariz to entrust his nephew, Don Pedro de Ursúa, with the mission of searching for El Dorado, he decided to put in command an expedition that should head north and appointed the experienced Ortún Velázquez as field master. Together they undertook the adventure in command of an expedition with 140 men. After overcoming many difficulties, they managed to commit the chiefdom of Cácota on October 26, 1549´´. The foundation took place only in 1555, when by the will of its founder and to distinguish it from Cácota de Suratá, it gave it its own name. The parish of San Jacinto de Cácota was created, as recorded in the books, on April 23, 1637, and its first parish priest was Fray Miguel de Lejía, having remained under the patronage of Our Lady of Dolores.

The first patrimony celebrated and registered in the parish books was between the Indians Luis Ingupa and María de Cativón, chief of two of the most important tribes, in February 1692.
