The Cathedral being the main religious building of the Diocese, is affirmed as a center of aesthetic climates in successive works of transformation. These artistic solutions radiate from here to the area of their direct influence.

In the long history of the Cathedral of Porto three phases stand out: from medieval times the foundation that defined the architectural contours; of modern times, the transformation of the edifice conditioned by the Catholic reform, makes it assume a coherent image where the interior arts - carving, painting, stucco, and others - are its main discourse; the last one was in the twentieth century the controversial intervention of the National Monuments, which sought to purge it of its baroque ambience leading to the formal purism of the period that shaped its form.

The works of the Cathedral began at the end of the twelfth century and lasted for the next. Its foundation can not be alien to the conquest of Lisbon, nor to its forms the commercial relations that the city established with the region of Rochelle, where it seems to find the roots of its influences. Although the current bed is a work of the early seventeenth century (Bishop D. Frei Gonçalo Morais), the primitive had a chapel surrounded by ambulatory, with three chapels radiating and two apsidolos. A headboard with a tray, like many others in the limo. Salient transept and body of the cathedral in three naves of five sections. Architecturally it results from a symbiosis between Romance and Gothic solutions. These still visible in the use of broken arches, in the polystilos pillars, in the pioneer use of the flying buttress, and in the radial rosacea of the facade. This was flanked by two towers, partly transformed in the eighteenth century, like the whole facade. From this period, the Gothic cloister, with direct access from the nave of the church, stands out.
