Moorea
Mooréia is an island in French Polynesia, one of the Windward Islands, 17 km (11 miles) northwest of Tahiti. The true orthography of Mo'orea is Mo'ore'a, which means "yellow lizard" in Tahitian: Mo'o = lizard; Re'a = yellow. Aimeo or Eimeo (among other spells incomprehensible by the first visitors without knowledge of the language). Early settlers and western travelers also referred to Moorea as the island of York.
Tourism
Just minutes from the island of Tahiti by plane, and only thirty minutes by high speed catamaran, Moorea magically climbs out of the ocean in a burst of green velvet.
A wide, shallow lagoon surrounds the island's vertical mountains, where poetic lines of waterfalls plunge into fern cliffs. Peaceful meadows flanked by green pinnacles fill your senses and renew your belief in the majesty of nature. Houses painted in pastel colors, surrounded by hibiscus gardens and bird-of-paradise, circulate the island in a fantasy of happy but simple villages.

This, the poetic name of the island, comes from the eight majestic mountains; However, the name was later changed to Moorea, which means "yellow lizard" - following a dream of a high priest.

Gastronomy
Maa'a Tahiti (Tahitian food) is basically a natural kitchen made largely with fresh produce, plenty of tropical fruits and often flavored with vanilla. It is also not very spicy and use of spices is almost non-existent.

Tahitian cuisine explores much of what is offered by nature as fruits and seafood. Fruits like pineapple, banana, papaya, melon, apple are of excellent quality, especially the Moorea pineapple which is considered one of the best in the world.

Fish is the main food in the region. On these islands, the most passionate about fish and seafood will be in paradise, but the carnivores will have no problems and can satisfy themselves with succulent steaks and pork dishes.

Today, its traditional cuisine, based on many fruits, tubers and wonderful fresh fish, is a mix of dishes influenced by French, Chinese and Polynesian cuisines.

Traditional Tahitian food is a great blend of fafa (tuber leaf taro) and uru (breadfruit), fish - both raw and cooked, pork, coconut milk and some vegetables.
Weather
December-March shows slightly higher levels of heat (average 27ºC). June - September is cooler season (average 25ºC).
